We investigate records of past extreme events to understand future risks.

The Pacific Northwest is home to dramatic mountains, tranquil lakes, deserts, diverse plant and animal life. The beauty of this region is the result of nature’s greatest forces: constant pounding by the mighty Pacific Ocean, periodic intense shaking from megathrust earthquakes and related volcanic eruptions, and is sensitive to climate variability. These events disturb sediments which accumulate and can be used to provide evidence of these events through time.

Cascadia Paleo investigates sedimentary sequences from lakes and oceans to interpret the severity and impacts of the hazards they record. It is the goal of this organization to involve regional organizations, and include opportunities that empower individuals and communities, in association with all projects.
